Sunderland Film and Television Studios Set to Become Reality.

Plans to develop a world-class film and television studio complex in Sunderland have received a major boost thanks to funding secured through the government’s “trailblazer” devolution deal.

This ambitious project, known as Crown Works Studios, is a £450 million collaboration between FulwellCain Studios Limited and Sunderland City Council. The state-of-the-art facilities will be built on the south bank of the River Wear and will serve as a hub for skills and innovation in the UK’s film and television industries.

The announcement comes at a time when the North East film and television sector is already experiencing a significant boom, with productions in the region up 28% compared to the previous year. Crown Works Studios is poised to turbocharge this growth, establishing itself as the largest studio complex outside of London and the southeast.

This project is much more than just bricks and mortar. It’s about “levelling up” the region by creating significant employment opportunities, nurturing and retaining skilled individuals, and driving economic growth in Sunderland and beyond.

The arrival of Crown Works Studios represents an unprecedented opportunity to reshape the landscape of the UK’s screen industries, placing the North East firmly on the map as a major player in film and television production. This is a significant development for the region, and we eagerly await its ground-breaking!
